The Breakout Grant Finalist: RECIPE by Franklin and Emily

Franklin+Emily is working to scale-up its RECIPE (Restaurant Employees Collaborating In Part-Time Employment) project. Through RECIPE, Franklin+Emily has hired laid-off NYC hospitality workers as furniture makers and purchased sustainable materials from US-based small businesses in order to meet increasing demand.

Franklin+Emily rolled out RECIPE on a trial basis in Summer 2020 as a means to address increasing demand for Franklin+Emily’s products, by employing laid-off NYC hospitality as part-time workers and supporting small businesses throughout the US during the pandemic. What began as a way to address the studio’s need for skilled workers and a traceable, sustainable supply chain proved to be a viable business model: since the project’s inception in April 2020, Franklin+Emily has provided part-time employment to 10 workers and invested in other small US businesses through the purchase of parts and materials, helping Franklin+Emily keep up with customer demand, grow bookings and increase sales.
