April 30, NYC | Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month, 3.1 Phillip Lim presents Crafting Selfhood, an exhibition of Asian American female identifying artists and designers from May 1st – 23rd.
Organized by Karen Wong and Lora Appleton, the exhibition assembles a myriad of stunning ceramics and sculptural objects on display at the 3.1 Phillip Lim flagship at 48 Great Jones Street. While traditional portraiture continues to dominate the art world, the presentation provides a broader discussion of how form, technique and medium illuminate the creative process. These AAPI artists integrate heritage, identity and, oftentimes, sly humor into the work.
Crafting Selfhood takes inspiration from 3.1 Phillip Lim’s new handbag family, the ID. Creative Director, Phillip Lim, reimagined his cherished ID bracelet, recontextualized against the organic form of Anish Kapoor’s sculptures, to embellish a new collection of leather bags with distinguishing hardware. The bag, which reinforces community and craft, two pillars of the 3.1 brand, have become a signature of the designer’s 2024 body of work.
The dozen artists’ works will be displayed at the 3.1 Phillip Lim showroom space on Great Jones Street in NYC alongside an installation of the ID bag. Highlights include LA-based Myung Jin Kim’s terracotta vessels expressing her passion for gardens and Janny Beak’s porcelain creatures suffused with alien beauty. Ecuadorian-born Cecile Chong revels in her socio-cultural background and presents a dozen encaustic swathed ‘babies’ from her series GuaGua. Antonia Kuo’s knock out tree-like sculpture harken towards a dystopian landscape while Phaan Hwong celebrates tropicalism in her paintings and peculiar planters.
Featured artists include: Janny Baek, Julia Chiang, Cecile Chong, Phaan Howng, Lena Imamura, Sonya Yong James, Myung Jin Kim, Antonia Kuo, Eungi Jun and Halin Lee, Eny Lee Parker, Linda Sormin, Steffany Trần
Crafting Selfhood is presented in partnership with Bailey’s Irish Cream Liqueur, Meta Prosper, and the Female Design Council.
