Brooklyn, NY | May 17, 2024 – DESIGN DYSPHORIA, a queer designer-led exhibition of 17 architects, artists and designers will open in Bushwick, New York on May 17, 2024 during NYCxDesign. Co-curated by designers and founders of Studio S II, Erica Sellers and Jeremy Silberberg, textile artist Liz Collins, and interdisciplinary glass and performance artist, Grace Whiteside, the exhibition emphasizes the cruciality of queer creative spaces to highlight how they inform LGBTQIA+ art and design.
While the queer community is intimately intertwined with the environments it constructs and inhabits, there continues to be a need and opportunity to establish new places that prioritize queer voices and comradery. What is the significance of being a LGBTQIA+ designer in a world that is just beginning to integrate queerness into its common milieu?
The resulting exhibition comprises vignettes showcasing an array of works that include furniture, glass lighting fixtures, textile artwork, and interactive design objects by majority women, nonbinary, and trans designers and artists that seek to foster connections and a sense of belonging within the LGBTQIA+ community.
This show features a curated group of emerging to established queer designers and artists with an emphasis on the works of trans, non-binary and female identified makers. Some of the featured designers and artists include,
Studio S II, Yolande Milan Batteau, Vivian Chiu, Liz Collins, Pamela Council, Deborah Czeresko, Poppy Deltadawn, Nima Jeizan, Kira Keck, Fawn Krieger, Larry Krone, Jeremy Martin, Zander Schlacter, Zev Schwartz, Zhi Wei, Grace Whiteside, Fo Wilson
Along with an opening party on May 17th 7-10pm, we will also have a thoughtful panel discussion with the curators on May 19th 3pm- 5pm, moderated by Stamatina Gregory, Chief Curator of Leslie Lohman Museum. This discussion will follow the format of “Queer Brunch” as well collaborate with local LGBTQIA+ bartenders to serve elevated brunch cocktails. The show will be on view until May 25th.
