Guests are invited to explore Powerhouse Arts (PHA), the leading fine art fabrication facility in NYC that convenes and connects artists to each other and vital resources to advance their creative practice. PHA President Eric Shiner will pull back the curtain on how art is fabricated in the hive of workshops dedicated to ceramics, print, and more, while architects Philip Schmerbeck of Herzog & de Meuron and Jim Seger of PBDW will speak to the extraordinary transformation of the historic power station.
PHA, a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression, stewarded the redevelopment of the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station in Gowanus to create a new facility that houses fabrication facilities for ceramics, large metals, print, public art, and textiles. The building—designed by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with PBDW Architects— re-imagines the historic power plant as a new art center that meets the multidisciplinary needs of the contemporary arts ecosystem, with multi-use facilities for education, events, and public engagement.
Tour guests will explore the mezzanine of the Grand Hall and The Loft, will getting a sneak peek at the Pratt Fashion Show, as well as fabrication workshops: Community Ceramic Studio, Alpha Workshops textile studio, MGC Community Print Shop, PHA Printshop and Digital Print Lab, and Workspace 11 metal fabricators.
