Thought Matter presents an NYCxDesign experience exploring what it means to be a “good neighbor” today. As systems reshape how we connect, the event considers how proximity, trust, and responsibility are formed and what it takes to build community under these conditions.
Today, “neighbor” is no longer just geographic. It is shaped by platforms, policies, and systems that influence who we encounter, what we see, and how we relate to one another. From digital networks to public infrastructure, the terms of connection are designed. The idea of community has long been tied to proximity, trust, and shared responsibility. But what happens when those conditions begin to erode? What does it mean to show up for one another in systems that mediate, filter, and fragment how we connect?
This event brings together perspectives across design, technology, culture, and civic life to explore how those conditions take form and what they require of us. Through a mix of voices, formats, and interactions, it creates space to consider how proximity is constructed, experienced, and shared. As recipients of the National Design Award for Communication Design, Thought Matter uses this moment to reflect on the role design plays in shaping not just connection, but responsibility. The studio’s work has always been grounded in collaboration with the communities it serves, and this project continues that commitment. Design defines us, but how we show up for one another is what connects us.
