Ritual & Care: A Book Salon

Ritual & Care: A Book Salon by Common Things explores ritual and care through publishing, readings, and workshops. The space becomes a public reading room and gathering setting, with a curated selection of books and conversations with artists, designers, and authors, reflecting on everyday practices, material culture, and shared experience.

Common Office presents a week-long book salon at Common Things as part of NYCxDESIGN, centered on ritual and care as spatial and collective practices. The project brings together publishing, design, and everyday life through exhibitions, readings, and workshops. The space becomes an open reading room, presenting a curated selection of books, zines, and independent journals on domesticity, material culture, and contemporary rituals. Visitors are invited to engage freely, encouraging slowness, reflection, and informal exchange.

Program Structure

Day 1, Opening: Book Launch / Zine Release + Talk
A public launch with an invited publisher, editor, artist, or designer, followed by conversation and signing.

Days 1–7, Exhibition: Ritual Library (12–6 PM daily)
A curated display of books, zines, and journals. The space functions as a public reading room for browsing and informal use.

Days 2–6, Readings & Conversations
Intimate sessions with invited authors, artists, and designers exploring ritual through daily practices and collective memory, combining reading, discussion, and gathering.

Day 7, Closing Workshop: Practices of Care
A hands-on workshop translating ritual into making through tactile processes such as paper, textile, or botanical techniques.

Positioned between exhibition and social space, the project rethinks the book salon as both a curatorial platform and a gathering environment, reflecting on how we inhabit space, relate to objects, and connect through shared practices.
