ULE is a compact universal light engine integrating LED, battery, and USB-C charging into one unit, delivering touch-dimmable, cordless illumination with interchangeable casings for adaptable use across environments and design expressions.

ULE (Universal Light Engine) is a compact system that integrates LED, battery, and charging into a single unit. This rechargeable, touch-dimmable light is designed for versatile use, featuring USB-C charging, adjustable light levels, and over 12 hours of cordless illumination. Interchangeable casings and finishes allow ULE to adapt to different environments and design expressions.
An integrated magnetic hinged ring enables multiple orientations. Whether placed on a surface, directed toward objects, or used to shape light and shadow, ULE explores the relationship between light and attention. By directing the beam, the user chooses what to highlight, transforming everyday objects into focal points.
For SHINE, ULE is housed in a streamline “modern” crafted metal casing call ATTA. Inspired by the hidden systems that keep cities alive. The circular form references cast-iron access points embedded in urban streets—manholes, service covers, and utility caps—objects often overlooked yet essential to the complex infrastructure beneath the city.
The inspiration for the lamp comes from the iconic New York City manhole cover, an object embedded in the street providing access to the hidden systems beneath the city. The concentric rings show the speed, smoothness and aerodynamic simplicity of NYC evolution of Art Deco.
ATTA, a Sanskrit word associated with the idea of the soul, points to something fundamental yet invisible. In a symbolic way, the soul and a manhole share a similar meaning, both provide access to unseen systems that sustain life. The soul is understood as the invisible essence that provides life and meaning to our existence, while a manhole grants entry to the underground infrastructure that allows a city to function.
One sustains human life from within, the other sustains urban life from below.
Together, ULE and ATTA form a small, portable object that reveals, through light, what is usually hidden.

A project by

Luis Pons/Luis Pons D-Lab

Luis Pons is an architect and multidisciplinary designer born in Caracas, Venezuela, where he studied architecture before relocating to Miami in 2002.

His work moves fluidly across scales and disciplines—from architecture and interiors to objects, lighting, and art installations—guided by a belief that design is not about complexity, but about revealing what is essential.

Each project is conceived as a living system: something that can evolve, adapt, and invite participation. Through the reinterpretation of familiar forms and the transformation of function, his work seeks to uncover new meanings in what already exists.

Pons is interested in objects that do not impose themselves, but instead engage the user—objects that invite touch, interaction, and change. Humor, magic, and surprise are not embellishments, but integral tools in creating emotional connection.

He is the founder of Luis Pons D- Lab, based in Miami.
