2 WAVES devices
2 charging docks
A wave of sound, a wave of light, a wave hello. WAVES is a bespoke installation for SHINE and NYCxDesign 2026 theme: Design Connects Us.
Crafted from reimagined landline telephones, the iconic Bang & Olufsen BeoCom 2, WAVES continues a legacy of communication. This pair of interactive lamps translates human movement into reactive sound and light waves. These signals are recorded and transmitted to the partner WAVES device, transforming a simple gesture into a sensory language of connection.
The electrical engineering and sound composition, developed through a collaboration with WolfCo Design. The project reconnected Grant and Joe Borrello of WolfCo, former colleagues from 2015 at 3D Systems. This collaboration is a direct embodiment of the annual NYCxDesign theme.
By evolving a classic icon for a modern context, WAVES demonstrates that imagination is the key to extending the value and meaning of what already exists.
Growing up on a landfilled portion of New York and later living in rural British Columbia, Grant sought to harmonize the industrial and natural worlds. He works to preserve the beauty and utility of our planet by aligning design with the circular economy.
This experience drove Grant to found Not For Granted Studio, a circular home goods brand focused on value preservation, creating objects that remain in use, adapt over time, and resist obsolescence.
He studied industrial design at Parsons School of Design and sustainable business through the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the University of Exeter. His work spans the full lifecycle of circular product development, from material innovation to regenerative supply chains and business transformation, with experience at startups and Fortune 100s.
Today, alongside his studio, Grant serves on the board of IDSA New York as Circular Economy Officer, advancing design as a driver of long-term value.
