Erwan Boulloud | Touching Time

May 20 – May 20, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

French designer Erwan Boulloud draws inspiration from the infinitely small to the infinitely vast—from botanical species to medieval jewelry. His fascination with time—both ephemeral and eternal—and with the traces of the past lies at the heart of his work.

Like a modern-day alchemist, Boulloud transforms these concepts into exquisitely crafted objects that are audacious, ingenious, and rich with narrative. His creations spark curiosity and wonder, seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation.

A key influence in his work is what lies beyond the naked eye—microscopic imagery of cells. For over two decades, he has explored this theme, developing intricate concentric patterns that echo natural formations, from cellular structures to ripples on water’s surface. These patterns are deeply intentional, often inspired by mythology, scientific phenomena, or mathematical principles. “I appreciate how Erwan’s patterns always have a purpose,” notes Twenty First Gallery founder Renaud Vuaillat. “They are never random, but rooted in a physical phenomenon he has observed.”

Boulloud’s mastery of materials is evident in his meticulous approach. A longtime proponent of metals such as patinated bronze, stainless steel, and brass marquetry, he continually pushes boundaries by incorporating materials like concrete, burnt wood, and alabaster. He describes alabaster as a stone that “carries its entire history within it”—a reference, once again, to time.

A core element of his process is the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with advanced technology. Digital tools enable him to create intricate designs that would otherwise be too time-consuming or costly to produce. 3D printing and laser-cutting techniques enhance his ability to bring complex forms to life while preserving artisanal savoir-faire. “I’m an artisan, but also a firm proponent of 21st-century craftsmanship,” Boulloud explains. “Digital technology significantly expands the scope of possibilities.”

Boulloud returns to Twenty First Gallery with Touching Time, his first U.S. solo show since 2019. Featuring 15 new and recent works, the exhibition refines and expands his ongoing exploration of time, science, and evolution. He views each piece as part of a larger whole, evolving like a “family tree” of ideas. At the core of his practice is a profound fascination with science—from the origins of creation to the vast expanse of the universe—moments where time itself seems to shift and transform.
