Elements in Flux: A Cross-Cultural Dialogue Between Art, Five Phases and Sustainability

May 16 – May 16, 1:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Elements in Flux
A Multidisciplinary Exhibition at the Peterson House

Elements in Flux is a multidisciplinary exhibition hosted at the Peterson House that explores a cross-cultural framework bridging the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Five Phases (Wu Xing) with contemporary concepts of sustainability. Through a dynamic presentation of painting, photography, and multimedia works, the exhibition responds to the accelerating glacial melt and the transformation of Arctic ecosystems driven by human activity. The project seeks to open an artistic, intellectual, and ecological dialogue between Eastern elemental philosophy and Western environmental science.

Using the Five Phases—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—as a conceptual lens, the exhibition reinterprets climate change through the language of art and design. It bridges cultural philosophies by highlighting shared values such as interconnectedness, circularity, balance, and resilience.
