Fractured Horizons Exhibition

May 16 – May 23, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Fractured Horizons
A Hybrid Exhibition Exploring the Tensions Between Cultural Heritage and Technological Futures

Fractured Horizons invites you to explore the compelling tensions between cultural heritage and technological futures through a groundbreaking hybrid exhibition at PI Art Center. This multidisciplinary showcase examines the interplay of continuity and disruption between civilizational remnants and emerging post-human landscapes, offering fresh perspectives on the dynamic relationship between heritage and innovation.

Interdisciplinary Convergence
The exhibition brings together diverse creative disciplines—art, design, and technology—to interrogate how we understand and engage with our evolving environment. By juxtaposing traditional artifacts with futuristic visions, Fractured Horizons fosters a dialogue that transcends temporal boundaries, encouraging viewers to rethink their relationship with both the past and the future.

Human-Environment Dialogue
Featured artists challenge anthropocentric narratives by examining industrial ruins and urban decay not as remnants of bygone eras, but as complex environments shaped by intersecting forces. Their work explores how artificial intelligence, automation, and ecological systems might collectively forge new spatial realities, proposing alternative frameworks for human-environment interactions.

Deconstruction and Reconstruction
Guided by the themes of transition, decentralization, and contradiction, the exhibition simultaneously deconstructs fragmented historical narratives and constructs hopeful visions of future spaces. This dialectical approach invites viewers to imagine new possibilities that extend beyond conventional paradigms.

Dual-Campus Experience
Launching simultaneously on May 16, 2024, at PI Art Center’s NJ and NY campuses, the exhibition offers a unique bicoastal experience:

NJ Campus (7:00–8:15 PM ET)
Hosts the primary conceptual program featuring presentations by acclaimed artists Dominic Terlizzi, Leonard Yang, Chenlin Cai, and Bethany Altschwager, who will discuss their creative processes and interdisciplinary practices. The evening begins at 6:00 PM with an immersive sensory experience, followed by opening remarks from organizers VSDesign, PI Art Center, and ALT Ally.

NY Campus (7:00–8:15 PM ET)
Offers a complementary reception connected to the NJ event via livestream. Attendees will engage with exhibited works in an intimate setting enhanced by ambient soundscapes that transition from industrial decay to speculative futures.

This collaborative initiative by VSDesign, PI Art Center, and ALT Ally aims to foster global dialogue among artists, designers, and scholars, while deepening public understanding of how design can bridge traditional cultural elements with emerging technologies. By questioning prevailing narratives of progress and decay, Fractured Horizons invites audiences to envision alternative futures shaped by both technological innovation and ecological wisdom.
