Grand Central Madison – A New Landmark and Cultural Corridor

Grand Central Madison, the largest rail terminal built in the Unites States in decades, is a uniquely designed train terminal. The 350,000 square foot public concourse spans five city blocks under Midtown Manhattan and feeds the East and West Caverns below, each accommodating two platform and four tracks, creating the eight-track Long Island Rail Road terminal below the historic Grand Central Terminal.

In addition to many passenger experience enhancements, Grand Central Madison is a cultural corridor to Long Island, featuring two permanent artworks by world class artists Yayoi Kusama and Kiki Smith, digital art commissions and Poetry in Motion displays in monumental LED screens, a photography exhibition that celebrates the unique nature of New York City, live music performances, and the latest digital technology systems. The spectacular art by celebrated contemporary artists have become permanent fixtures and a destination in the elegant new Grand Central Madison.

The NYC x Design Festival participants will hear firsthand from Yaling Chen, Deputy Director, and Bridget Donlon, Manager, about commissioning and installing site-specific artworks, both permanent and temporary, created for Grand Central Madison, and throughout the MTA network.
